Week 6 Blog: My Three Sources

Does Hollywood Still Have a Princess Problem?

It’s a podcast from Freakonomics by Stephen J. Dubner. It’s a source where the host is discussing female gender issue with various people including early Hollywood movie star, college professor, and high school teenager. I plan to use this source to provide some of the ideas of gender issues for Disney movie. One of the guests in the podcast says that “In my opinion, the biggest problem we have in the world –– of all the problems that we have –– is gender inequality” (00:56). I could use this quotation to elicit some of the scenes that are shown in the film.

With Rogue One, Star Wars Goes Full Feminist.

It’s an article by Megan Garber which we’ve read in this class. It’s a reading about how the Star Wars movie, Rogue One, is different from the other ones in feminism. It compares scenes in Rogue One with those in early Star Wars series and shows how the leading female behave in a heroic way. The author writes that “She is no damsel; even when things get dire, we do not see her in distress” (Paragraph 5). I could use it as an example to compare what is shown in my film to see if there’s any similarity or difference.

Is Gender a Social Construct? in 7 minutes.

It’s a YouTube video talking about gender and social construction by a channel called Thought Monkey. The speaker discusses some of the basic idea of how gender is viewed in the society. One of the sentences the speaker says is that “Feminists tend to disregard many biological factors, while naturists tend to overlook sociocultural factors” (0:51). I could use this source to provide an overall background for my film to talk about female and gender issue.
